Ozzy’s Health Problems Were Made Worse by a Botched Neck Surgery
In 2019, Osbourne had a fall that fractured his neck, requiring surgery to insert screws and metal plates. However, his family observed that the surgery didn’t enhance his well-being; in fact, it seemed to decline his quality of life. They felt it made things worse instead of better. More information is available on his condition.
“I saw my dad go from being able to sit up to-I’m sorry to say this, but I can’t find the words-having a hunched-over posture like Gollum,” Kelly Osbourne, Ozzy’s daughter, explains.
Kelly’s sister Aimee Osbourne explained, “He was experiencing significant pain and deep sadness, and I believe he was also in a state of shock. The fall itself was traumatic, and then dealing with the aftermath, coupled with his inability to recover as he usually did, and ultimately having to cancel the tour-that was, I think, what hurt him the most.”
Ozzy’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, shared that her husband, who had become sober again before he passed away, was suffering more than she’d ever witnessed. “The pain wouldn’t go away,” she remembers. “It was a constant, overwhelming discomfort. And while I know Ozzy can be dramatic and will go to great lengths for pain medication, this was genuine. You could tell just by looking at him.”
Music Improved Ozzy’s Mood — To a Point
Following his surgery in 2019, Kelly motivated her father to return to the studio. There, he started creating what would become his 12th album as a solo artist, Ordinary Man. Ozzy explains that getting back to recording helped lift his spirits, and his son Jack Osbourne points out that the music from this time period shows the emotional pain Ozzy was experiencing.
Jack explains, “I really believe that Ordinary Man feels less like a typical Ozzy Osbourne album and more like a personal reflection from John Osbourne,” referring to his dad’s given name. “The album explores a lot of themes about him coming to terms with his life, his own mortality, and the challenges he was facing. It wasn’t about the wild, chaotic persona – the ‘bat-biting’ image – but rather a snapshot of where he was at that point in his life.”
Ozzy Considered Suicide After His 2021 Surgery
Ozzy underwent another operation in 2021 to fix a previous surgery he’d had in 2019. Doctors determined the initial procedure had been too extensive. Despite hoping to relieve his pain, Ozzy still had to delay and eventually cancel his planned farewell tour, which caused him to become deeply depressed – he even considered ending his life at that point.
“The thought of not doing any gigs anymore, I went really into depression,” he says. “I’m on antidepressants now, actually. Because I was getting ready to off myself at some point. But then I’ll go there in my head and I go, ‘What are you f***ing talking about?’ Because knowing me, I’d half-do it and I’d be half-dead. … I mean, I wouldn’t die, you know? That’s my luck.”
Kelly also observed her dad’s deep sadness, explaining, “He completely stopped drawing. He didn’t even go practice shooting, or do anything really. He was just utterly miserable. He felt trapped, like he couldn’t find a way to cope, and was desperately looking for an escape.”
What Ozzy Really Thought About His Black Sabbath Firing
Although Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979 and Ronnie James Dio took his place, he rejoined the band for several performances, including this last show. The movie reveals that he remained bothered by being fired, and Sharon says she’d often find him watching old interviews with Dio while flipping between documentaries about World War II and the Vietnam War.
Kelly shares with the camera that her dad will always be deeply affected by being let go from Black Sabbath. “He’ll never get over that. Ever, ever, ever, ever,” she says. She explains that the experience was incredibly painful for him – more than words can express – and truly devastated him. He considered the other band members his brothers, his closest family, and everything he knew.”
I completely agree. It was such a difficult time for him, really traumatic. Losing his dad and then being kicked out of the band… it felt like everything was falling apart. He really felt like he had nothing left, and had to completely rebuild his life. I think it definitely changed how he approaches things, you know?
Ozzy Suffered From Social Anxiety
Ozzy Osbourne is sure to be remembered as one of the greatest rock musicians ever, but in the movie, he admits there were parts of being famous he wished he could have avoided. He explains, “If I’m dwelling on something, it really bothers me.” He also adds, “If I have an obligation or need to give a speech, I fing hate making speeches.”
Kelly explains that while her dad was comfortable performing for large audiences, he often struggled in more relaxed, everyday settings. “It seems strange that someone who can command a stage in front of thousands of people would have trouble feeling confident in smaller groups,” she shares with the camera. “But that’s exactly what happens with him. He experiences incredibly severe social anxiety – it’s the worst I’ve ever witnessed. People wouldn’t believe how deeply insecure my dad truly is.”
Sharon and Ozzy Were Planning a Quiet Retirement
After Ozzy’s final performance, he and Sharon planned to spend their retirement relaxing at their home in England. They both expressed feeling liberated after the Back to the Beginning concert, looking forward to a peaceful life together.
“July 5, period. You’ve done well, now let’s go home,” Sharon states. “I simply desire a peaceful existence. That’s my only wish. I want to create a comfortable little world somewhere where we can simply live our lives together, doing the things we enjoy.”
