In an April interview with Polygon, Brad Rau, the executive producer of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, was questioned about whether Maul’s fate in Star Wars Rebels would permanently prevent his return to the Star Wars universe. Rau responded by saying:

“You never know. We’re just focusing on this one time period right now.”

For a long time, bringing characters back from the dead has been a recurring issue in Star Wars. If a character like Maul were to be killed twice by the same Jedi, it would create a strange plot point and diminish the sense of risk in the stories. It would also make Obi-Wan Kenobi appear less skilled and undermine the reputation of all Jedi. While a surprise return can sometimes be effective, Star Wars is starting to make death feel unimportant. From Maul to Emperor Palpatine, the franchise needs to accept that characters should stay dead.

When Disney reset the Star Wars universe, discarding the old expanded universe and creating a new official timeline, it initially felt like a chance to tell fresh stories. The previous collection of books and comics, now called “Legends,” often brought characters back from the dead – including Emperor Palpatine and Boba Fett – in ways that felt more like fan-made stories than official plot points. However, with Palpatine and Fett both returning in recent Star Wars projects like The Rise of Skywalker and The Book of Boba Fett, and the possibility of even more resurrections like Maul’s, Disney’s current canon may actually be less consistent and believable than the old one.

Palpatine’s unexpected return in The Rise of Skywalker became a running joke among fans, largely because the movie didn’t explain how he came back. Poe Dameron’s line, “Somehow, Palpatine returned,” perfectly captured the confusing situation. This sudden plot twist felt unnecessary and undermined the entire sequel trilogy. Palpatine’s explanation referenced an old line from the prequels, claiming the dark side allowed him to overcome death repeatedly—a skill he suggested Darth Maul could also learn. Despite the negative reaction to his return, Lucasfilm doesn’t seem to have learned from the experience.

More Characters Are Likely To Cheat Death

Bringing Darth Maul back in a future Star Wars story would be a bit like the franchise making fun of itself. With Dave Filoni now in charge at Lucasfilm, it seems this kind of thing might keep happening. He previously brought Maul into The Clone Wars and revived another villain, Asajj Ventress, in The Bad Batch. It doesn’t look like this trend will stop anytime soon. Many fans are even hoping to see Mace Windu, who died in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, return, and Samuel L. Jackson has even expressed his own excitement about the possibility.

Now that Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc Pit, it feels likely we’ll see a story similar to The Clone Wars, perhaps involving the return of Mace Windu. Boba, like Darth Maul before him, would naturally seek revenge for his father’s death – Jango Fett was killed by Windu years ago. This echoes the dynamic between Maul and Obi-Wan, where Maul wanted payback for losing his legs, and Obi-Wan was driven by the death of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. Given this pattern, it wouldn’t be surprising if Dave Filoni explores a similar revenge storyline in a future Star Wars show.

Even if Maul returns from the dead again, many fans feel the Star Wars franchise is losing its impact. When characters repeatedly survive deadly lightsaber battles, the stakes no longer feel high. For future Star Wars stories to feel meaningful, Lucasfilm needs to allow characters to face permanent consequences, including death.
