According to Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian & Grogu successfully connects with all periods of Star Wars history, essentially serving as a tribute to the entire saga. He explained further:
It’s wonderful to see people of all ages and from all over the world enjoying Star Wars together. That feeling of unity is especially strong at events, and I appreciate how the franchise brings diverse stories and fans together.
Once, the original Star Wars trilogy – A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi – was all fans had. Now, almost 50 years later, there’s much more to explore. The prequels and sequels appealed to different generations, and a variety of animated and live-action TV series have broadened the franchise, attracting new viewers.
Even if you haven’t seen all of The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett, you’ll still enjoy The Mandalorian & Grogu. The movie is designed for all Star Wars fans! Recent Nielsen data also showed how different generations watch Star Wars. Gen Z preferred The Clone Wars, but The Mandalorian was the top choice for Baby Boomers and Gen Alpha, based on viewership in early 2026.
So, after Din Djarin officially adopted Grogu and settled down on Nevarro at the end of Season 3, he traded bounty hunting for more straightforward work with the New Republic. That’s where this new movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, picks up. Basically, Din and Grogu are on a mission to rescue Rotta the Hutt – Jabba’s son, played by Jeremy Allen White – hoping to get intel on a New Republic target in return. It’s a fairly simple setup, but it gets our heroes back in action.
The character Rotta was previously played as a baby in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film and a subsequent episode of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. Ayo Edebiri, known for her role in The Bear, now voices the adult Rotta in The Mandalorian & Grogu, where he appears as a gladiator. The new film will also include Jabba the Hutt’s twin cousins, who were first seen in The Book of Boba Fett.
The new movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu will also star Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward, who leads a group called the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers. It arrives in theaters on May 22nd.
