Last year, I was asked to perform a stunt I really disliked. It was incredibly nerve-wracking – honestly, the most nervous I’ve ever been. I spent a lot of time practicing and perfecting it, but in the end, they ended up cutting the whole thing from the show. I probably shouldn’t be saying any of this!
At the very start of season two, before the suit is revealed, you see a boat, the Northern Star, pass under a bridge. A small figure then drops onto it. Originally, they had planned a different, more impactful moment: a close-up of me on the bridge. This would have been the first time viewers saw my character, DD. The camera would be very close, then pull back to reveal me standing and turning. Then came the stunt – a trust fall! It wasn’t actually on the bridge, but a set built in the studio, still about 25 to 30 feet high. I asked about safety mats, and they explained I’d be secured with wires. I questioned them, concerned about the lack of padding, but they insisted the mats would actually be more dangerous, and offered to put them there anyway.
I had to do a really intense trust fall – about 25 feet high! They even had me lean back and fly through the air before coming down. Luckily, the stunt rigging team was fantastic, and I completely trusted them. Despite that, I was still incredibly nervous!
I was shocked when I learned they had removed it. I immediately knew I had to get a copy of that video.
I have to admit, this is a perfect illustration of a tough but necessary creative choice. There’s this saying, ‘Kill your darlings,’ and it’s about letting go of something you love – a scene, a line, anything – if it doesn’t truly serve the overall work. That’s exactly what happened here. It was a part I really enjoyed creating, honestly it was both fun and a little scary to work on, but it just wasn’t the most effective way to start the story or get the point across. If we still had DVD extras, I’d absolutely share it with you all, but sadly that’s not the case anymore.
Daredevil was created by the legendary comic book team of Stan Lee and Bill Everett. He debuted in his own Marvel comic book, Daredevil #1, in 1964. Interestingly, Daredevil’s creation came about in a unique way. Following the popularity of Spider-Man, Marvel’s publisher, Martin Goodman, requested that Stan Lee develop a similar hero, which led to the birth of Daredevil.
