, directed by Paul Greengrass (United 93, Captain Phillips), centers on Kevin McKay, played by McConaughey, a troubled school bus driver, and America Ferrera as Mary Ludwig, a committed teacher. Together, they work to rescue 22 students from a “terrifying inferno.” The Lost Bus is inspired by the true story of McKay, who heroically saved 22 students and two teachers during the 2018 Paradise, California fire.

I grew to truly appreciate acting as a skill. When I first started out acting, I enjoyed it, but I didn’t really understand the process. I relied on gut feelings those first 30-something years. After around eight years, I began to understand the craft of acting – to understand *why* I had those initial instincts. Once that happened, I really started to love it,” McConaughey explained.

McConaughey On What He Learned from The Lost Bus

He explained, “I figured out how to cope when I was feeling down or stuck. Then, I developed a way to analyze characters to help with that. It took about 25 to 30 years to learn, and I’m still improving, but I have a solid foundation now. I’ve grown to truly appreciate and respect the artistry of acting, seeing it from perspectives I never considered before. Now, when I’m considering a role, I want to be able to draw on my own experiences. That’s what I’m feeling when I act these days.”

Regarding his work on The Lost Bus, McConaughey shared that he gained new self-awareness. “People are always asking, ‘What makes a hero?’ And during this time, I saw many truly heroic people performing inspiring acts. But I realized a common trait of heroes is that they move *towards* a problem, not away from it. As for becoming a father, Paul Greengrass said something that really resonated with me, and it shaped both my character and my own perspective: ‘I missed my chance to be a good son, and I fear I’m now missing my chance to be a good dad.’ It made me think about how sometimes you get a second chance to make things right,” he explained.
