It’s understandable why Dave Filoni focuses on the Imperial era – those nineteen years were packed with action, and fans are interested in seeing stories from that time. I’m not criticizing these shows or games at all, but Star Wars seems overly reliant on the Empire’s rule. It’s similar to how some fans get tired of seeing Tatooine so often. While it’s a great planet, the franchise should be able to create new and equally interesting worlds.

While most Star Wars stories created by Dave Filoni focus on the period immediately before and during the Galactic Civil War – often called the Dark Times – the era of the New Republic, where The Mandalorian is set, is a slight departure. However, even these stories frequently connect back to the Empire and the original trilogy, as Din Djarin often fights against Imperial remnants. Because of this, the years surrounding the Galactic Civil War are arguably the most explored period in Star Wars fiction.

Star Wars Has So Much More To Offer Than Just The Empire

A common criticism of Dave Filoni’s recent Star Wars projects is their heavy focus on the era of the Galactic Empire. While the Empire provides a strong foundation for storytelling and has been the backdrop for many memorable Star Wars narratives, the galaxy itself has a much richer and more expansive history than the relatively short period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

I’m eager to see Star Wars explore time periods beyond the familiar Imperial era. While The Acolyte sparked debate, the High Republic offers a wealth of potential, as evidenced by the existing books and comics. The period after the fall of the First Order in the sequel trilogy also feels unexplored, offering a chance to build something new. The old Expanded Universe was great at this – jumping around the timeline to discover fresh and interesting stories, and that’s what I’d like to see again.

The world of Star Wars is looking to expand its storytelling beyond the familiar eras of the Galactic Empire and the New Republic. Plans include Dawn of the Jedi, set 25,000 years before the Skywalker family’s story, and potential future stories after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. While this broadening of the timeline is a positive move, it’s not a sure thing – Lucasfilm has a history of announcing projects that are later cancelled, so there’s no guarantee these new ideas will actually become films.

Dave Filoni is a talented storyteller, and he could create incredible Star Wars stories if he wasn’t limited to the time period of the Galactic Empire. He could explore the ancient Sith, the origins of the Jedi, Rey’s efforts to restore the Jedi Order, or really any era or storyline he could imagine.

Star Wars doesn’t need to venture into distant eras. I’d love to see a show set during or right before The Phantom Menace, or even one following Luke Skywalker’s adventures with the Rebel Alliance. There are many interesting periods in the Star Wars history that Dave Filoni could explore, but he seems to be prioritizing projects like Maul – Shadow Lord instead.
