Man, Murdock was really getting to Fisk, just relentlessly chipping away at him with his words. He kept talking and talking, and finally hit a nerve. When Murdock casually dropped, “Imagine if we’d never met?”, that was it. Fisk completely lost it, just flew into a blind rage. It was intense!
The thought of losing Charlie Cox as Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin is upsetting for any Marvel fan. We’ve enjoyed almost a decade of their incredible on-screen rivalry, showcasing gritty, realistic fight sequences between Daredevil and the Kingpin. These characters have been enemies in the Marvel comics since 1981, and while Cox and D’Onofrio haven’t been playing these roles quite as long, the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again represents the longest either actor has played a single character.
As we look ahead to the third season of Daredevil: Born Again, actor Vincent D’Onofrio was asked what he enjoys most about playing the complex villain Wilson Fisk over multiple seasons. He shared that he appreciates having the time to fully develop and evolve the character with each new season.
Honestly, it all comes down to the writing. As a fan, what really grabs me is seeing where the writers take a character, the path they set them on. Of course, the actor gets more comfortable with the role over time, that’s pretty obvious. But beyond that, I need to feel something from the script itself, be excited by the other actors, and really connect with the overall vibe of the show. It’s that constant search for something inspiring that keeps me hooked, you know?
The Loss Of A ‘Sister’ In The Daredevil Cast
This season of Daredevil: Born Again seemed to take its cues from current events and news stories in the United States.
Vincent D’Onofrio’s character, Wilson Fisk, became the Mayor of New York City and quickly used his position to create a powerful task force targeting vigilantes. This group was so strict and far-reaching, it reminded many of immigration enforcement agencies. As a result, Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) were forced into hiding. However, they discovered a chance to expose Fisk’s connection to a shipment of illegal weapons, leading them on a dangerous, time-sensitive mission throughout the season.
Any similarities between the show and real-world events are likely just chance, considering the lengthy process of creating a season of Daredevil: Born Again. It’s a team effort involving current showrunner Dario Scardapane, along with stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio.
According to D’Onofrio, Scardapane shares his ideas with the actors right away, and they start planning together. D’Onofrio contributes his own suggestions, aiming to influence the direction of the Kingpin’s story each season.
This season featured major plot twists, like the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones and the surprising death of Vanessa, Wilson Fisk’s wife, in the fifth episode of Born Again.
It’s really enjoyable working with my co-star. The scenes where we portray everyday, home life are particularly fun – it’s strange, but in a good way, to play a character like Wilson Fisk in those situations. It also offers the audience a fresh perspective on our characters.
D’Onofrio shared, “She’s incredibly talented. I’m a big fan of Ayelet – we’ve been close like family for twelve years, and I’m really going to miss her.”
Vanessa’s death has unleashed a truly dangerous Wilson Fisk. No longer held back by his conscience, the Kingpin is now a ruthless crime boss. As he tells Daredevil, he has nothing left to lose, and nothing anyone can offer him that would change anything.
This is a man who has lost everything. How far will he go to gain some of it back?
From Thor to Kingpin
This isn’t the first time Dominic D’Onofrio has played a famous Marvel character, though the specifics might be a little different than the original stories.
Around 40 years ago, after gaining attention for his role in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, D’Onofrio appeared in Chris Columbus’s comedy Adventures in Babysitting. He played Dawson, a car shop owner who was trying to repossess a vehicle needed by Elisabeth Shue’s character. But because of his long blonde hair and muscular build, the young character Maia Brewton mistook him for Thor, the Marvel superhero.
Interestingly, a line Jon D’Onofrio delivered in Babysitting actually sounds similar to something his Daredevil character, Wilson Fisk, would say. He gets right in the face of the young boy, Brewton, and gruffly tells him, “Listen, kid. This is the city. I only look out for myself.”
That’s basically The Kingpin’s campaign slogan in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
When I mentioned it had been forty years since Adventures in Babysitting, D’Onofrio chuckled and shook his head. “It really does feel like a very long time ago,” he admitted.
It’s no surprise D’Onofrio has had a successful career. He’s a remarkably versatile actor who has collaborated with many famous directors, including Oliver Stone (JFK), Tim Burton (Ed Wood), Robert Altman (The Player), and Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days). He’s perhaps best known for his role in the original Men In Black, where critics particularly praised his unique and physically demanding performance as a man inhabited by an alien.
D’Onofrio acknowledges that dealing with critics comes with the territory of being an actor. While the show Daredevil has generally been praised, he hasn’t always gotten positive reviews for everything he’s done, and he’s learned to accept that.
You know, honestly, I feel like I’ve had it pretty good. It’s definitely changed a lot since I was starting out, though. Back then, you didn’t have nearly as much feedback – now with all the magazines and online stuff, you’re getting opinions from everywhere! But it’s all part of the game, and I get it. I really do feel lucky because, overall, I’m treated really well.
Our stunt coordinator, Phil Silvera, often directs those action scenes. He and his team plan everything out, create a visual preview, and then we start learning the choreography with them. Charlie and I definitely have different approaches to these scenes, but we always enjoy working together on fight sequences or any scene, really. It takes a lot of effort though – a full day of shooting with many takes and special effects to make it look polished.
The show is genuinely well-made, and even if it ends after the upcoming third season, Daredevil will be remembered as one of Marvel’s best TV series. It was groundbreaking in creating a darker, more realistic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, introducing characters like The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Luke Cage (Mike Colter). The new season, Daredevil: Born Again, cleverly connects the current MCU with the previous Netflix series, solidifying the studio’s storytelling and opening up exciting possibilities for Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio’s characters.
While Matt Murdock hopes for a resolution to the conflict between Daredevil and Kingpin, viewers and Vincent D’Onofrio himself are enjoying the rivalry and want it to continue.
Honestly, hearing D’Onofrio say that, it just feels like he’s determined to make this story happen somehow. He basically admitted that if this show doesn’t work out for it, he’ll find another way to get it done, and that’s really exciting as a fan!
