Top Of The Heap

1991’s “Top Of The Heap” was one of several attempts to create a spin-off from the popular sitcom “Married…With Children.” This series, headlined by Matt LeBlanc, initially aired as an episode within “Married.” Regrettably, it failed to gain traction despite boasting a talented ensemble that included LeBlanc, Joseph Bologna, Joey Lauren Adams who later starred in “Dazed and Confused,” the iconic Rita Moreno, and the late Leslie Jordan. The show was abruptly terminated after only 6 episodes, excluding the pilot.

Gloria

The iconic series “All In The Family” produced several spin-offs, with some, like “The Jeffersons,” experiencing immense success. On the other hand, shows such as “Gloria” did not fare as well. This program focused on the Bunker’s daughter as she navigated life in a new world as a divorced single mother. Unfortunately, it was only aired for one season before being canceled. It is worth mentioning that “Gloria” can also be considered a spin-off of “Archie’s Place,” which continued the storyline from “All In The Family,” as it initially premiered as an episode of the original series.

The Brady Brides

Originally intended as a television movie about Jan and Marsha Brady’s weddings, The Brady Brides was later planned to be a spin-off of the iconic series The Brady Bunch. However, the spin-off didn’t achieve the same level of success as the original show, airing for only 10 episodes in 1981. Notably, it marked the one and only time that all nine original cast members worked together on any reunion, revival, or TV movie after the end of the original series.

Beverly Hills Buntz

It’s quite possible that the title “Beverly Hills Buntz” signaled its destiny for failure. This series, a spin-off of “Hill Street Blues,“, focused on Det. Norman Buntz (played by Dennis Franz), who transitioned from police work to private detective services for the wealthy and famous in Beverly Hills. However, despite being marketed as a comedy, it failed to elicit laughter, and its tone veered dramatically from its precursor. Given these circumstances, it’s no wonder that the show lasted only one season.

Katy Keene

Lucy Hale starred as the lead character in the series titled “Katy Keene,” a spin-off from CW’s “Riverdale” based on the comic book character of the same name. Other Archie Comics characters, such as Josie McCoy and her best friend Pepper Smith, were also part of “Katy Keene.” Unfortunately, the show didn’t recreate the success of “Riverdale,” and it was canceled after its first season consisting of 13 episodes. Buddies

Did you realize that Dave Chappelle appeared in a spin-off series from the popular sitcom Home Improvement? In one episode of the Tim Allen-led show, Chappelle made a guest appearance and was subsequently given his own show titled Buddies. Unfortunately, this series only ran for four episodes before being cancelled. However, unlike this short-lived program, Dave Chappelle’s career flourished and he didn’t vanish into obscurity.

Young Americans

Though Dawson’s Creek continues to be cherished, its brief spin-off series, Young Americans, is largely overlooked nowadays. The show ran only for eight episodes without making a significant impact or leaving any noteworthy imprint.

Sons Of Thunder

During the 1990s, “Walker, Texas Ranger,” with the iconic Chuck Norris in the lead role, gained immense popularity. Towards the end of the decade, Norris and his brother Aaron came up with a spinoff titled “Sons of Thunder.” Sadly, this series only made it through six episodes, which might be the reason you haven’t encountered it much.

Mrs. Columbo

To put it simply, there’s no denying that Columbo’s enduring popularity can be attributed mainly to Peter Falk’s outstanding portrayal of the title character. This isn’t meant as a slight towards Kate Mulgrew, who delivered an excellent performance as both Falk’s character’s wife and a journalist/crime investigator in Mrs. Columbo. However, it must be acknowledged that no one could possibly match Falk’s brilliance in a comparable role.

Enos

As a die-hard fan of the original “Dukes of Hazzard”, I was taken aback when I stumbled upon the spin-off series titled “Enos”, starring our beloved Enos, played by Sonny Shroyer himself. Frankly, it’s astounding that this show managed to air 18 episodes!

A Man Called Hawk

Fans of the Spenser: For Hire book series are well aware of how awesome the character Hawk is. Portrayed by Avery Brooks in both Spenser and its spin-off, A Man Called Hawk, this character is truly unbeatable. Sadly, despite his potential to star in a fantastic show, it didn’t gain much popularity and was cut short after airing only half a season and 13 episodes.

Booker

Richard Grieco took over Johnny Depp’s role in the early Fox success “21 Jump Street,” and he successfully developed his character, Booker, into a standalone series. However, this series only ran for one season between 1989 and 1990. Similar to other shows on this list, it didn’t capture the same magic as the original show and struggled to attract the same viewership.
