I was so moved when I read that Newman shared with Us Weekly and Give Me My Remote on September 25th that Kidd’s past really came back to affect her. Apparently, her worries about becoming a mom – which stemmed from being raised by her aunt after losing her parents as a teenager – were really haunting her when she found out she was pregnant so soon after the adoption didn’t work out. It just broke my heart to hear how much that history was impacting her feelings now.
Everyone noticed how happy and excited Severide was. Because of that, any doubts Kidd had disappeared in that moment, but those feelings still lingered, as Newman explained. We wanted to show that when Kidd learns the pregnancy didn’t continue, she feels guilty. She feels guilty because she wasn’t as fully committed to the idea as Severide was.”
The showrunner shared that Kidd and Severide will be “shifting gears” and realizing that “you can’t plan every step” when it comes to becoming parents. They’ll be learning as they go.
Newman hinted that the characters previously had a specific idea of what family would be, but now a different, new family dynamic will unfold. She explained that Kelly helping Natalie-a teenager she rescued from a fire years ago-during season 13, combined with Kelly’s own experience of losing her parents as a teen, will continue to influence this evolving story.
She explained, “Ultimately, their relationship faces many hurdles and unexpected problems, even though they are deeply in love. Being a parent always presents difficulties, and this couple is no exception when it comes to dealing with those challenges.”
