The episode starts with a fight at a club called Vampire Weekend in Sunnydale, then cuts to a beautiful fall day in New York City, where a professional-looking woman enters an office building—she works for a large insurance company.
According to Variety, the show depicts her as appearing intelligent, polished, and content working in a typical office environment, complete with a nameplate reading “Anne Summers.” This is a nod to season 3, when Buffy used her middle name and tried to live a normal life as a waitress after repeatedly saving the world. It seems she’s now pursuing her original goal from season 1: simply living an ordinary life.

A lot of the criticism for the perceived problems with New Sunnydale focused on director Chloé Zhao. Apparently, her quiet, understated filmmaking approach didn’t quite fit the needs of a first episode, which typically requires a lot of explanation and establishing details.
