
HBO has decided not to renew Steve Carell’s show, ending it after only half a season. The cancellation comes a month before the season finale.
According to reports, HBO has renewed Rooster for a second season. Even though only five of the ten episodes have aired and the season finale isn’t available until May 10th, the show’s strong performance led to the quick renewal. Rooster is averaging 5.8 million viewers in the U.S., making it HBO’s most popular new comedy in over a decade.
Rooster Will Return for Season 2 on HBO
Bill Lawrence, co-creator of the show (also known for Shrinking and Ted Lasso), expressed his gratitude for Warner Bros. Television and HBO’s continued support and for Casey, Amy, and Channing giving them the chance to continue the series with Steve and the fantastic cast. He called working on the show a career highlight, especially for his co-creator, Matt Tarses.
Amy Gravitt, Head of Comedy Series at HBO, said audiences have really connected with Rooster, just like the team did when Steve, Bill, and Matt first created the character. HBO, along with its partners at WBTV and Doozer, is excited to see what happens next for this fantastic group of actors in the upcoming season.

Steve Carell Leads the Cast of Rooster
The film Rooster features Greg Russo, a popular author who writes about a fictional character also named Rooster. He visits his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive, known from All My Friends Hate Me), at the New England college where she’s an art history professor, and ends up taking a job as a writer-in-residence there. The movie is a funny and somewhat awkward comedy, but it also shows a touching relationship between a father and daughter.
The film features a talented cast including Danielle Deadwyler (known for The Harder They Fall), Phil Dunster (The Trouble with Maggie Cole), Lauren Tsai (Terrace House: Aloha State), John C. McGinley (Stan Against Evil), Annie Mumolo (Confess, Fletch), Rory Scovel (The Eric Andre Show), and Robby Hoffman (Hacks). Rooster is executive produced by Lawrence, Tarses, Carell, Ingold, Katzer, Adler, Mebane, Stassen, King, and Hyman.
