Mark’s time away from Earth shouldn’t be significantly affected by space travel. Based on the comics, traveling between Earth and Talescria would likely take no more than two weeks total, and adding the three-day trip to Viltrum, the entire journey would be around a month.
Final Verdict
Mark was only unavailable or delayed once before, and that was after a near-fatal encounter with Thragg, following the destruction of the Viltrumite home planet. As Allen mentioned in issue #76, Mark remained unconscious for “two weeks.”
To make the comic book storyline work, Mark could only have been in a coma for about eight months. The characters were constantly active, and considering how fast space travel is in both the comics and the show, this timeframe is the only one that logically fits.
However, Nolan specifically stated that Mark was only unconscious for “almost two months,” which greatly reduces the amount of time he was gone from Earth. Unless the show adds significant travel time to Viltrum or extends Mark’s recovery from his fight with Thragg in the next two episodes, he’ll only have been away for about four months by the season’s end.
This event happens six months before it’s shown in the comics, and could significantly change several ongoing storylines on Earth, especially considering it’s the largest time jump in the show since its third season.
How Could This Affect Omni-Man’s Relationship with Debbie?
While Mark and Nolan were off-planet for ten months, a major development happened back on Earth: Debbie ended her relationship with Paul. When readers see Debbie again in issue #78, she’s on the phone with Paul, coldly telling him to collect his belongings and stating she wants nothing left of him or their relationship in her home.
Debbie ended things with Paul because being with him didn’t feel right anymore, especially after reconnecting with Nolan. Paul was surprised to learn they’d even been dating. Nolan then pointed out, rather boastfully, that Debbie couldn’t continue the relationship once she’d seen him again – a line of dialogue very unlike the Nolan from the cartoon series.
Considering how quickly and unexpectedly Debbie and Paul reunited, it’s clear the show will handle their future relationship very differently than the original story. It seems unlikely Debbie would simply end things with Paul without it being shown on screen, particularly after only four months and considering how much more developed Paul’s character is compared to his comic book counterpart.
To show the four-month time skip, the show might have her living with Paul in their new home, having already sold her previous one. The extra six months could also allow for a more believable reconciliation between Nolan and Debbie, while still showing Nolan working to become a better person.
