He wasn’t always the lead, but he was absolutely vital to the Jackson 5’s sound – providing those incredible backing vocals and really driving the rhythm with his percussion on so many of their biggest hits. He was a key ingredient in their magic!
Marlon began his solo career with a strong start in 1988, releasing his first album, Baby Tonight. It reached number 22 on the US R&B chart, but would ultimately be his only album, as he later decided to focus on interests outside of the entertainment industry.
After building a career as a successful real estate agent, Marlon played a key role in starting The Major Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) in 1999, which later became known as the Black Family Channel.
The network was subsequently sold to the Gospel Music Channel.
Since 2015, Marlon has led the Study Peace Foundation, which works to foster peace and understanding around the world by developing programs that help people build peaceful lives and communities.
6. JACKIE JACKSON
Jackie Jackson, originally named Sigmund Esco Jackson, started performing as a solo artist in 1973, even though he was still part of the Jackson 5 at the time.
Although he pursued a solo career, he only released two albums. His second album, Be The One, came out in 1989, sixteen years after his first album.
Jackie found success beyond performing when she started two record labels in 2002: Jesco Records and Futurist Entertainment.
The singer, who has four children from three different marriages, was legally prohibited from contacting his first wife, Enid Spann. She claimed he had been physically abusive after their divorce in 1986.
In 2013, Jackie and his third wife, Emily Besselink, became parents to twin boys, just over a year after getting married.
7. LA TOYA JACKSON
La Toya Jackson, the fifth of Katherine and Joe Jackson’s children and their middle daughter, hasn’t focused on music since releasing her last album in 1995.
La Toya Jackson had a fairly successful music career in the 1980s and ’90s, releasing ten albums over fifteen years. However, her career declined after she began working with her husband, Jack Gordon.
Gordon initially worked alongside La Toya as her co-manager before they married in 1989. However, their marriage was troubled by claims of abuse, control, and coercive behavior.
La Toya Jackson later said her ex-husband, Gordon, completely controlled what she said publicly. This included accusations of abuse against her father and brother Michael, which she read from a prepared statement he allegedly wrote. She revealed this during a press conference in Israel.
La Toya and Gordon divorced in 1997. After the divorce, a permanent restraining order was issued to protect La Toya from her former husband, who later died of cancer in 2005.
In recent years, La Toya Jackson has been a frequent guest on several popular reality TV shows, including The Celebrity Apprentice, The Masked Singer, and RuPaul’s Drag Race. She also starred in her own reality series, Life With La Toya, which offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look at her life.

As someone who’s always been fascinated by creative journeys, I find the story of how Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson first connected particularly interesting. Before he was the legendary producer we all know, Quincy was already a celebrated jazz musician. They actually crossed paths back in 1978 while working on The Wiz – a fantastic, groundbreaking film that was a fresh take on The Wizard of Oz, and notable for featuring an entirely Black cast. It was the start of a truly iconic partnership!
Michael Jackson and producer Quincy Jones had a very successful partnership, starting with the disco-inspired album Off The Wall in 1979, continuing with the hugely popular Thriller in 1982, and reaching its peak with Bad in 1987. However, the relationship eventually soured and ended on bad terms.
Even after the pop star’s death, disagreements continued about who deserved royalties and credit for songwriting and production. Quincy Jones eventually sued the Jackson estate, claiming he hadn’t been properly compensated or acknowledged for his work on projects released after Michael Jackson’s death, especially the documentary This Is It (2009) and the Cirque du Soleil show Michael Jackson One.
After a 2017 court case, the producer initially won $9.4 million, but a later appeal lowered that amount.
Jones later died of pancreatic cancer at his Beverly Hills home aged 91, in November 2024.
9. BERRY GORDY
Berry Gordy, the creator of Motown Records, signed the Jackson 5 in 1968. He also helped write some of their most popular songs, including “ABC” and “I Want You Back.”
