Investigation Discovery

Psychiatrist Dr. George Blair-West said Jeni’s condition should be viewed as a “survival strategy.”

He explained that this condition appears before a child turns eight, and it’s essentially a way for them to cope with repeated, serious abuse.

In the documentary, Jeni showcased different personalities she has, which she calls “alters.” These included Symphony, who acts like a 4-year-old, Muscles, who presents as a 17-year-old, and Erik, who seems to be 21 years old.

Jeni has different ‘alters,’ or distinct parts of her personality, each with its own role. One of these, called Symphony, specifically holds the memories of the abuse she experienced.

Richard Haynes Was Arrested for Sexual Abuse

Following accusations from a woman in the U.K. and Jeni, Richard was arrested and faces 11 charges, including rape and sexual assault. Four of these charges relate to crimes against Jeni.

Jeni and her mother were subpoenaed to the U.K. to attend the trial.

Jeni said things fell apart on the day the trial was supposed to begin. Richard accepted a plea deal, and as a result, the charges related to the abuse Jeni experienced were dismissed.

Richard was found guilty of crimes connected to the victim in the United Kingdom and received a nine-year prison sentence.

Jeni said she returned from England feeling completely lost and heartbroken. She was deeply upset by what had happened and was struggling with her mental health. She and her family spent three weeks in a psychiatric ward hoping to heal and recover.

Jeni Haynes Reconnected With Richard Haynes in 2003

Jeni reached out to Richard in 2003 to wish him a happy birthday.

She explained that she’d written him a letter urging them both to mature, accept the situation, and move forward. She hoped they could communicate through letters, and if he didn’t react as she wished, she was prepared to end their connection and walk away.

Jeni explained she was eager to move past the abuse she experienced and build a life focused on something other than it.

She deeply missed her father. They used to talk on the phone for hours – sometimes three or four at a time. She remembered him as a kind and thoughtful person who always considered others. He was, she said, exactly the father she had always hoped for.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! As they kept talking, Richard actually wrote a letter asking to move to Australia in 2003! It was so sweet! And Jeni, she was totally on board – she said she filled out all the official stuff to help him get a permanent visa. Can you imagine? He wanted to be with her forever in Australia! It’s just…everything!

I’ve seen so many people fall into this pattern – someone comes into your life and feels like exactly what you’ve been missing. For Jeni, that was Richard. After a couple of months of being around her family, he really seemed to step up and be the father figure she’d always dreamed of. It was a beautiful thing… until it was tragically shattered. Allegedly, on her birthday, Richard sexually assaulted her, and everything completely changed. It’s a heartbreaking reminder that appearances can be incredibly deceiving.

The experience was incredibly painful. It was then I fully understood my father was still a predator, and that would never change. That realization marked a turning point – I stopped supporting his efforts to remain in Australia, and he was subsequently detained by immigration authorities.

Richard was officially deported back to the U.K. in 2005.

Jeni Reported Richard Haynes’ Abuse in 2009

In 2009, Jeni went to the Australian police to report the abuse against Richard.

She explained that they had worked tirelessly to share their experiences, and that the truth they were revealing felt almost unbelievable.

Jeni created a detailed 90,000-word statement describing her experience as a victim, capturing the voices of all her different personalities simultaneously. She explained that they were all united by a single purpose: to thoroughly document everything that had happened.

Jeni Haynes and Her Alters Testified Against Richard Haynes in 2019

Following years of Jeni’s collaboration with Australian police, Richard was arrested in the U.K. in 2019. He was subsequently brought to Australia to stand trial, which began in February of the same year.

Jeni described the trial as both frightening and positive, explaining that each of her distinct personalities, or alters, had the opportunity to share their experiences and provide testimony.

Inspector Paul Stamoulis stated that Jeni’s diagnosis was central to the case, and the trial could have failed if the court hadn’t accepted her testimony. Importantly, all of Jeni’s different personalities promised to be truthful during the proceedings.

During the trial, Jeni suggested the prosecution offer the defendant a deal, specifying which charges they would like him to admit guilt to.

Even though Jeni was disappointed Richard wouldn’t face all the accusations against him, she decided to accept a plea bargain.

She explained that while his short prison sentence felt unjust, the important thing wasn’t the specific crime he admitted to. What mattered was that he took responsibility with a guilty plea and served time, which is why she accepted the plea bargain.

Richard received the maximum sentence for child abuse in Australia: 45 years in prison.

Jeni described the sentencing as a very happy occasion. She explained that she was relieved the truth came out and that people believed her. She expressed deep gratitude to those who supported her and her family.

The documentary concluded with Jeni reflecting on her relationships with her alters.

I started a choir, and every member is incredibly important to me. I’m so proud of how they supported each other through difficult times, and I’m equally proud of what they’re achieving now. We’re not trying to create individuals who stand out; instead, we’re working together to create something beautiful as a unified whole – a symphony. It’s really exciting to see everyone contribute and become part of that larger, harmonious sound.
