I have to say, working on this show was a really fun experience. You can just feel the established chemistry – they’ve all been working together for so long, it’s a genuine team. As a guest star, I immediately felt welcomed and found a nice spot to contribute. Story-wise, my character’s journey felt inevitable. Coming in during season four, she made a big impact, so it made sense she’d eventually switch sides. I was relieved it didn’t happen in the predictable way, though! It’s interesting because while A-Train gets a full redemption arc, my character’s change is more…strategic. We see her doing things differently, but I don’t think she necessarily has a change of heart, and I really liked that nuance.

Sage struggles when she’s proven wrong for the first time, as the usually perceptive superhero misjudges just how far Soldier Boy would go to support Stormfront.

Susan Heyward believes the character’s past relationships haven’t been very fulfilling, making the idea of someone truly sacrificing for her difficult for her to grasp. She found it especially surprising that Soldier Boy, who consistently prioritizes himself and embodies traditional masculine values, would be the one to make such a selfless gesture. They discussed how the character, Sage, constantly calculates probabilities and predicts outcomes. The incredibly specific series of events – Homelander discovering Golden Geisha, his conversation with The Legend, and then appearing at a location he shouldn’t have been able to reach – felt improbable even for someone who manages probabilities. Ultimately, Heyward feels the odds finally worked against her, leading to the unexpected outcome.

The character, who also appears in the now-canceled show Gen V, struggles with realizing how mistaken he was. When Heyward points it out, Sage experiences something of an identity crisis.

Watching her is like seeing a moment get stuck on repeat, almost like something’s broken in her reality. It’s heartbreaking, because it seems like when things don’t go as planned, she really spirals. She starts questioning everything – who she is, what she’s meant to do, and if she even matters to anyone. Honestly, I think she’s going through a really tough identity crisis and she’s going to need a lot of support to find her way out of it.

Frenchie’s Death Forces Sister Sage To Recalibrate Her Perception Of Love

After witnessing Frenchie’s selfless sacrifice for Kimiko in episode 7, Sage begins to rethink her understanding of love. She’s forced to consider the deeper meaning of Frenchie’s death and how it changes her perspective on what love truly is.

Susan Heyward explains that her character is deeply affected by the quick succession of selfless acts from Soldier Boy and Frenchie, especially Frenchie’s ultimate sacrifice. This forces her to confront the reality of giving up everything for someone else and being loved in return. Frenchie treats her like a person, connecting with her emotionally in a way others haven’t, and she’s starting to feel a genuine emotional connection – something she attempted in ‘Gen V’ but didn’t receive in return. Being so close to experiencing that reciprocal love is completely new territory for her.

Everything Else Susan Heyward Said About The Boys’ Fifth And Final Season

ScreenRant asked the actor about the season finale, noting it was the only episode kept secret, suggesting major events were coming. They highlighted that the character Sage is experiencing a positive shift and were curious about the actor’s initial reaction to reading the script. They wanted to know if the showrunner, Kripke, had prepared them for what to expect.

I read the script and immediately felt something was missing. I really liked the idea of building ‘positive momentum’ for the character. I wanted to ensure her final moment felt earned, considering everything that led up to it. My main concern was that, in trying to surprise the audience, we didn’t ignore the character’s established journey. So, I worked closely with the writer to make sure the ending connected logically to everything that came before. That’s pretty much the core of my involvement.

ScreenRant asked if something that felt missing from the finale was later included in the final version.

Susan Heyward: It did.
