Before her book came out, Panettiere had only suggested there might have been issues between her and her fellow actors when they weren’t filming.
In a September 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hayden Panettiere, formerly of Heroes, revealed she repeatedly apologized to Connie Britton during the initial filming of Nashville. She explained she didn’t want to overstep or cause any problems. Panettiere, who was 23 at the time, also confessed that after their first scene together, she behaved in a passive-aggressive way towards Britton.
In her book, Hayden Panettiere described how she felt about working with Connie Britton. She explained that at twenty-three, she saw Britton, a seasoned actress in her forties with three Emmy nominations, as someone deserving of all the spotlight. Panettiere worried that Britton might perceive her ambition as a personal competition, rather than simply her striving to do well with her role.
As a longtime follower, I was deeply affected by Hayden Panettiere’s memoir. It honestly tackles some really difficult parts of her life – things like the public scrutiny around her relationship with Milo Ventimiglia when she was so young, and the heartbreaking abuse she experienced with Brian Hickerson. But what really struck me was learning how much effort she put into being a supportive colleague to Connie Britton, always wanting to make sure she wasn’t accidentally causing any issues on set. It showed such a thoughtful side to her, even amidst everything else she was going through.
Panettiere explained that they were instructed to casually walk towards the microphone at the same time and both reach for it – a move intended to highlight the competitive relationship between their characters. She always made a point of placing her hand under Connie’s on the microphone, as a gesture of peacefulness and respect.
She added that she wasn’t sure if the other person realized it, but she certainly did. She didn’t want to risk upsetting Rayna Jaymes or Connie Britton by overstepping.
