2023 年 10 月 13 日午後 7 時 32 分頃、リッキング郡保安官事務所は、自宅で反応しない幼児についての通報を受けました。警察が到着し、救急隊員が赤ちゃんを発見し、治療のためリッキング記念病院に搬送された。
Doctors at the hospital declared the baby deceased and noted concerning injuries. This led to a 20-month investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Topp was reportedly watching the baby at the time of the incident while her mother was at work.
According to court records obtained by WBNS, the man first told police he was asleep when he heard the baby struggling to breathe. He then stated he took the baby out of the crib to try and give CPR, but didn’t call for emergency help.
As a close follower of this case, I learned that family members told investigators they frequently heard the baby crying. They also said they’d previously confronted Topp, upset that he wasn’t properly caring for the child, according to reports from WCMH.
According to reports, Topp wouldn’t accept help from his family and prevented them from seeing the baby. They also stated that he frequently stayed up all night playing video games, drank alcohol, and didn’t adequately care for the infant.
The autopsy showed the baby died from homicide by asphyxiation. The coroner also noted red marks on her neck and bruising on her jaw, indicating she had been strangled or suffocated.
Toxicology reports showed the baby tested positive for delta-8 THC. This finding came after the father, Topp, said he had smoked around the baby.
It’s absolutely heartbreaking, but the investigation showed that Mr. Topp just wanted to go back to sleep. Apparently, he forced the pacifier into the baby’s mouth with so much pressure that, tragically, she suffocated. It’s just devastating to think about.
Assistant Prosecutor Tyler McCoy stated that Topp consistently lied during the extensive investigation, but eventually admitted he caused the baby’s death.
According to WBNS, the Licking County Sheriff’s Office conducted a lengthy investigation. During multiple interviews, Mr. Topp was found to be dishonest. After his arrest, he admitted he used too much force when putting a pacifier in the baby’s mouth, causing her to become unresponsive.
Topp is in the Licking County Jail and needs to post a $200,000 bond to be released. His trial by jury is set to start on July 27th.
It’s currently unknown whether Topp has entered a plea or hired a lawyer. The Licking County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t yet responded to a request for information about the case from Us Weekly.
