Initially, many believed Ncuti Gatwa would be the Fourteenth Doctor, and David Tennant would return as the Tenth Doctor, much like he did for the show’s 50th anniversary. However, Tennant’s return was kept secret until the end of “The Power of the Doctor,” surprising both the Doctor and the audience. This reveal also confirmed that Gatwa would actually be taking on the role of the Fifteenth Doctor.
The season finale of Doctor Who delivered a surprising twist, and then doubled down on it. Not only did the Fifteenth Doctor regenerate into a form that looked like Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler – a return that wasn’t publicized – but the episode, titled “The Reality War,” also turned out to be Ncuti Gatwa’s last as the Doctor. Both surprises were kept secret until the show aired.
Doctor Who’s Future Will Be More Fun If We Don’t Know When Regenerations Are Coming
When an actor leaves their role on Doctor Who, it naturally starts a period of anticipation for fans. Once the final episode with that actor is announced, viewers begin preparing for their departure and eagerly await the reveal of the next Doctor, which often happens well in advance. However, the last two times a Doctor has changed, the announcements weren’t so predictable, and that element of surprise was a welcome change.
A new Doctor Who Christmas special is planned for late 2026. While it hasn’t been officially stated, most fans believe Billie Piper’s return will be a single appearance, meaning she likely won’t be the next Doctor. The special will probably introduce the next lead actor, but it’s currently unknown whether they will be the Sixteenth or Seventeenth Doctor – this depends on whether Piper is returning as Rose Tyler or playing a completely new role.
The BBC should probably keep future Doctor regenerations a complete surprise. When a Doctor’s time is nearing its end, it would be best not to reveal anything about the next one beforehand – not even who will be taking on the role.
To surprise and delight viewers, it would be great if Doctor Who continued to reveal unexpected plot twists. Plus, David Tennant will be returning to the Doctor Who universe in a new audio drama scheduled for 2027.
