Enter…Doctor Doom
Doctor Doom debuted in 1962 in Fantastic Four #5. Although initially known as the main enemy of Reed Richards, Doom was such a powerful and complex character that he couldn’t be restricted to only fighting Mister Fantastic and his family every now and then. He later challenged the Avengers as a team, and also battled Spider-Man and Daredevil.
‘Enter… Doctor Doom’ gathers together the earliest stories featuring the ruler of Latveria. The majority of these comics were originally created by the iconic team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby during their work on Fantastic Four. This collection features different storylines, including the main story where Doom takes the power of the Silver Surfer. Through it all, these comics establish Doom as a brilliant expert in both science and magic.
One particularly interesting story originally appeared in 1969’s Marvel Superheroes #20. This comic offered an unusual early depiction of Doctor Doom as a hero. In it, he tries to rescue Valeria, a woman from his past. However, his efforts to save her actually cause her to fall out of love with him. This sets a pattern for many of Doom’s later heroic deeds – he often fails to get what he truly desires, even when he succeeds in his missions. It’s a bittersweet irony that follows him.
Books of Doom
Numerous comics have touched upon the beginnings of Doctor Doom. But none explored his backstory with as much detail and boldness as Books of Doom. First released in 2005 as a six-issue series, it’s generally accepted as the most complete and accurate account of Victor Von Doom’s life. Books of Doom truly defines his origin story.
The narrative begins with Doctor Doom telling his life story to a reporter who isn’t seen. We hear his memories of the past mixed with conversations with people who were close to him. We discover how others see Doom – from his early years as a Romani peasant, to his time as a rebel leader – and, importantly, how he sees himself.
Pablo Raimondi’s artwork is incredibly detailed and beautiful. However, it’s the story told by Ed Brubaker that has made Books of Doom so well-known. Though the story feels authentic, what Doom says doesn’t always match up with other accounts. Ultimately, it’s up to the reader to determine whether Doom is the heroic figure he believes himself to be, or simply a villain pretending to be noble.
Secret Wars (1984)
As a huge comic book and cinema devotee, I remember when the first Secret Wars crossover started. It’s funny, it began as a way to sell action figures, but it quickly became so much more than that. So many key storylines came out of it – like the introduction of Spider-Man’s symbiote costume, which was a game-changer! But what really stuck with me, and what I think is its most lasting impact, is how it cemented Doctor Doom as the ultimate Marvel villain. It really established him as *the* big bad.
The story revolved around a powerful cosmic entity known as the Beyonder, who became intrigued by Earth-616’s superheroes. He constructed a combined “Battleworld” using fragments of various planets, and then challenged two opposing armies to determine which was superior: Good or Evil.
It’s no surprise that Doctor Doom immediately took charge of the Evil team. While the other villains were busy fighting for better positions and seeking revenge, Doom was playing a much longer game. He secretly intended to steal the power of the Beyonder for his own use. Although becoming a god didn’t last, Secret Wars definitively proved how incredibly dangerous Doctor Doom can be.
Triumph and Torment
Approximately once a century, the Vishanti assemble the most powerful magic users to compete for the title of Sorcerer Supreme. The trials are incredibly difficult, but the potential rewards are significant. Wizards who successfully complete the tests but don’t win are given a special gift from the newly crowned Sorcerer Supreme.
This is the story of how Doctor Strange ended up indebted to Doctor Doom. Doom immediately asked Strange to use his powers to rescue his mother’s soul, which was trapped by Mephisto. Because of the rules of the Vishtani, Strange had no choice but to agree to this request. It was a debt he was obligated to repay, and Doom knew it. This favor was not optional; Strange was bound by the ancient laws to fulfill it.
Many fans believe Triumph and Torment is the greatest comic book featuring either Doctor Strange or Doctor Doom. Mike Mignola really excelled with the artwork, and Roger Stern’s script expertly blends fantasy and horror. It’s also significant for introducing the unusual friendship between the two doctors, which has continued in later stories. Furthermore, this story is considered one of the best at showcasing Doctor Doom’s more vulnerable side, revealing how he still carries the pain of losing his mother.
Doctor Doom (2019)
When Tony Stark and Reed Richards collaborated to create a contained black hole on the moon, it wasn’t shocking that Doctor Doom criticized it as a risky endeavor. Even less surprising was Latveria’s subsequent launch of missiles at the lunar base, resulting in thousands of casualties. In fact, the only ones genuinely taken aback by these events were the citizens of Latveria and Doom himself. It was a predictable outcome for everyone else.
To demonstrate his peaceful intentions, Doctor Doom turned himself in to SHIELD. However, the helicopter taking him to custody was attacked, and the leader of Latveria was accidentally released. Now, relying solely on his intelligence, Doctor Doom needs to clear his name. Furthermore, he must protect his country from those who aim to humiliate him and oppress his citizens.
Many comics ponder if Doctor Doom is genuinely a villain. However, this 2019 solo series stands out by portraying him as a hero. It’s a fresh take to see Doom wrongly accused of a crime, and Christopher Cantwell expertly utilizes this premise. The artwork by Salvador Larroca is just as impressive. Plus, it’s hard not to be entertained by a story featuring Doctor Doom riding a bear named Novak.
How we chose the best Doctor Doom comics
There are plenty of excellent stories featuring Doctor Doom. When creating this list, we looked for tales spanning his entire history. We also aimed to select stories that showcased Doom’s complex nature. Though he’s certainly a formidable villain, he can also act as a hero, depending on the situation. In fact, it might be most accurate to simply call him great.
