Following the recent passing of Dr. Jane Goodall, who peacefully died in her sleep at age 91, we are reflecting on her incredible legacy. A Facebook post confirmed that Goodall “not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share.” She sparked curiosity, hope, and compassion in people globally, and encouraged many others – especially young people – giving her optimism for the future. We extend our condolences to her family and friends.
Just a quick note: Gary Larson, the creator of The Far Side, has requested that people not share his comics online. Even though using them here would likely be considered fair use, I’m choosing to respect his wishes and won’t include the actual Far Side comic in this article. I’m not criticizing others who do share them, but I personally won’t be doing so.
As I mentioned before, Gary Larson often playfully offended people with his funny The Far Side comic. He sometimes featured real people or elements of popular culture in his work. (As I’ve said, there was one instance where Larson regretted offending someone – he’d criticized a film based only on what he’d heard about it, before actually seeing it. When he finally watched it, he thought it was alright!) But Larson rarely apologized, because it was usually obvious that his humor wasn’t meant to be hurtful.
However, it seems Dr. Jane Goodall didn’t see it that way when Larson used her as the joke in an August 1987 comic strip…or did she?
How did Gary Larson allegedly offend Jane Goodall in a Far Side strip?
Jane Goodall is a well-known zoologist and primatologist, famous for her research. She began this work in her 20s, over SIXTY YEARS AGO (she is currently 90 years old). As (that’s where I got the above images from):
With just a notebook, binoculars, and a deep love for animals, Jane Goodall fearlessly ventured into the unknown to offer the world an incredible look at chimpanzees – our closest animal relatives. Over almost 60 years of pioneering research, Dr. Jane Goodall has not only highlighted the critical need to save chimpanzees from disappearing; she’s also broadened the idea of conservation to include the well-being of the people and natural surroundings where they live. Now, she travels globally, giving talks about the dangers facing chimpanzees and environmental problems, and inspiring everyone to help protect all life and our planet.
So, back in August 1987, Larson created a comic strip with a joke referencing Goodall. This strip then received the following letter to the editor, published in the Arizona Daily Star…
To the editor:
I was shocked by a Gary Larson’s “The Far Side” cartoon in the Star on August 26th. It featured two of his animal characters – likely chimpanzees – in a tree. One, meant to be the female, was removing a long hair from the other’s shoulder. The caption said: “Well, well – another blond hair…Conducting a little more ‘research’ with that Jane Goodall tramp?“
Honestly, calling Dr. Goodall a tramp is just unforgivable – even coming from someone who calls *themselves* a “loony” like Larson. That cartoon was unbelievably offensive and in such bad taste that it really makes you wonder about the newspaper’s editorial judgment, especially since they claim to cater to readers who are, you know, above average intelligence. The whole thing – the cartoon and the message it was trying to get across – was just completely stupid.
Dr. Goodall is a globally recognized scientist who spent 28 years studying chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Her research significantly impacted the scientific community, leading to a reevaluation of what it means to be human. She discovered that chimpanzees also make and use tools, challenging the long-held belief that tool use was a defining characteristic unique to humans – a belief that had previously been used to demonstrate human superiority over other primates. This finding proved that the idea of man being the only tool-making primate was incorrect, and therefore, no longer a valid measure of distinction.
Dr. Goodall isn’t affiliated with any specific animal welfare organization, but she’s dedicated to improving how chimpanzees are cared for in research labs. She has promised to be a voice for these animals, advocating for them since they can’t speak for themselves.
“Tramp?” Hardly.
It’s deeply upsetting that the Star chose to publish something so offensive. Any woman would rightfully be offended by the suggestion that a female – portrayed here as a stereotypical, bespectacled animal, specifically a Larson character – wouldn’t understand the true nature of Dr. Goodall’s important research. The article wrongly assumes a woman would only focus on sexual interpretations. In fact, it’s disgusting.

What was Jane Goodall’s actual reaction to The Far Side comic strip by Gary Larson?
Goodall hadn’t seen the comic strip initially, and when she did finally see it, she had a particular reaction. She didn’t believe it was actually suggesting she was a tramp (and the strip certainly didn’t intend that). Later on, she wrote the introduction for one of Gary Larson’s Far Side collections.
Additionally, she took things a step further by licensing the comic strip for shirts, which were sold at The Jane Goodall Institute for several years! Here’s an example of one of the shirts, …
So, yeah, there was no feud between Goodall and Larson, she was cool with it all!
