Eurus Holmes was a crucial part of understanding Sherlock Holmes, and we finally saw her fully realized in “The Final Problem.” She appeared to be the one pulling the strings of much of Sherlock’s life, and was also connected to the Sherrinford facility where she had been kept.
In this episode, the detective experienced a major breakthrough: the cherished memory of his dog, Redbeard, was revealed to be a forgotten memory of a friend who had died in childhood. Eurus was responsible for the murder, which ultimately led to her being locked up. These deeply upsetting experiences profoundly impacted Sherlock, causing him to develop a way of separating his emotions and blocking out painful memories as a way to cope and continue living his life.
A particularly touching scene in Season 4 occurred when Sherlock, after being challenged by his long-lost sister, responded with love and empathy instead of aggression. He realized she would continue to push him until he felt forced to harm someone he valued, so he stopped her by offering the affection she desperately needed. This definitively showed that Sherlock wasn’t the sociopath he often presented as. He was clearly capable of deep emotions, and his bond with John served as strong evidence of this.
He wasn’t just incredibly smart; his ability to understand and manage emotions is what calmed a dangerous situation involving Eurus. While her being might have seemed strange to others, it actually explained a lot about Sherlock’s life. His family always kept to themselves, and his brother Mycroft remained distant. Truly understanding the detective was essential to adding layers to the story, something that had been lacking until now. Getting to know him was imperative in establishing depth.
Sherlock Challenged Fans’ Expectations
Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat could easily have created another sleek and sophisticated season of Sherlock, similar to earlier ones, offering a neat ending (or a break) that would have satisfied viewers. They could have featured standalone cases, just like Seasons 1 and 2. But they decided to take a different approach, and that choice is commendable. The positive reaction to Irene Adler in Sherlock Season 2 demonstrated that fans were hoping for more emotional depth from the typically reserved detective in future episodes.
The show had the creative freedom to take risks, but the creators decided to deviate from fan expectations. A lot of the criticism Sherlock Season 4 receives stems from its willingness to challenge established norms, delivering a season that was well-developed in terms of both its mysteries and emotional impact. Throughout the series, Sherlock had been gradually becoming more human, which was compelling to watch. It wouldn’t have been believable for him to suddenly experience love, sadness, or remorse without understanding the reasons behind those feelings. Considering this, Season 4 expertly showed how Sherlock evolved to that point – through difficult and deeply rooted family relationships.
This foundational work brings the series to a satisfying conclusion, and the show wouldn’t feel complete without it. While the sudden shift in tone might have initially surprised viewers, looking back, it was exactly what the series needed to feel finished. Crucially, the actors all delivered strong performances, making the story’s complexity feel genuine; otherwise, it would have come across as artificial.
Cumberbatch delivers his usual excellent performance, but Freeman’s portrayal of pain and rage really stands out this season. He plays a noticeably different character, and does so flawlessly. Sian Brookes is a new addition to the cast, and her eccentric character is captivating. Initially, she poses as “E” and develops a strong emotional connection with Watson, before revealing her disturbing and menacing true nature when confronting her brothers. Had her character been involved with Eurus, she would have quickly become a fan favorite.
Sherlock Season 4 didn’t deserve all the criticism it received, and revisiting the whole show-including the special episodes-could change people’s minds about what it offered.
