In the past, the hosts of Blue Peter were well-known figures that appeared to be a constant presence in our homes.
Twice a week, without missing a beat, the daring John Noakes graced our screens from 1965 to 1978. During this time, he showcased his courage by executing thrilling stunts, like scaling Nelson’s Column while wearing just his jeans.
As a dedicated follower of this beloved program, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing some remarkable tenures. Colleagues like Val Singleton and Peter Purves served tirelessly for ten and eleven years respectively during their time. In a later epoch, Konnie Huq graced our screens as the longest-serving female presenter, maintaining her position for an impressive decade starting from 1997.
If the presenters were considered national icons, their pets, too, hold a special place. Regardless of your generation – Baby Boomer, Generation X, or Millennial – it’s the Blue Peter dogs that bring back memories and hint at your age.
Born in the 60s, my family pets went by the names Petra and Patch initially, then Shep. For our younger audience members, think of a loving golden retriever named Bonnie or a smart border collie called Mabel.

Initially admired for its blend of sensible ideas and enjoyable humor, Blue Peter eventually turned into such a constant lecture that it became nearly impossible to watch.
For quite some time now, this program has been relegated from BBC1 and confined to the children’s channel (CBBC, on Freeview channel 201 for those unaware). Two years back, it was privately referred to by insiders as a ‘deeply unhappy, struggling ship’.
The show’s airtime was reduced to just one live broadcast per week on Fridays, with a repeat showing on Saturdays, resulting in significant budget cuts.
Previously, the team embarked on global journeys, visiting places such as Morocco, Mexico, and Sri Lanka. Now, their explorations are mainly based on remnants from other programs.
Due to the high demand for affordable content, the team of hosts – Abby Cook, Shini Muthukrishnan, and Joel Mawhinney – are now regularly reading out letters from listeners every week. This is a strategy that was previously only common on local radio stations.
But, by far, the worst aspect has become the constant emphasis on political correctness.
A more recent event found Abby making a trip to a race track, where she had the chance to take a seat inside a car modeled after a Formula E vehicle, which was constructed using repurposed electronic scrap.
Made primarily from repurposed computer chips and salvaged smartphone parts bonded together, the device managed to reach a speed just shy of human walking pace.
Abby recognized the efforts of her builders by presenting them with a ‘Blue Peter eco-badge’ as a symbol of their commitment to promoting environmental concerns.
Among them are about five fresh badges, joining the classic blue, silver, and gold ones. Some other badges arrive in shades of purple and orange, symbolically mirroring the television show’s focus on the LGBT rainbow flag.
According to the Blue Peter site, the rainbow flag holds six significant symbols, as evidenced by sections titled ‘Four Important Facts About Pride’ and ‘What Symbolizes Each Color of the Pride Flag?’ The latter page features a fun quiz to help kids grasp the correct interpretation of each color.
It’s quite different from what people used to do back in the 1970s, which was memorizing and following the Green Cross Code for safety on the roads, as they saw on TV.
On the web pages, children are prompted with questions like: “Who are the influential black figures in your life?” They are motivated to create their unique eco-friendly decorations (eco-bunting) and bake delicious vegan banana pudding in reusable cups.
The cumulative impact feels draining, overpowering, and inescapably significant. Unfortunately, what was once beloved as Britain’s best-known children’s program has been transformed into “Woke Peter.” (This phrase implies that the character or show has become excessively politically correct.)
Even the theme tune was ruined.
The lively, rhythmic, and infectious old sailor’s dance tune has been recorded in about a dozen distinct versions, one of which is a rock interpretation by the skilled musician Mike Oldfield, known for his work with Tubular Bells.
Today, you might not even know it’s the same song. The initial melody has been mostly erased, swapped for a chaotic symphony of electronic beeps, drum machine percussion, mechanical clapping sounds, and high-pitched squawks.
In my expertise, a disturbance persists for about 40 seconds, yet it’s during the final eight that a familiar figure, somewhat reminiscent of an awkward ex-colleague, subtly intrudes – a character who, in a perfect world, the broadcasting giant would prefer to distance itself from.
No wonder children don’t want to watch.

Absolutely, television has undergone significant transformation from the era of Val, John, and Pete. However, it wasn’t too long past when several million people continued to tune in with bated breath.
The show concluded in 2011; it was moved to CBBC (Children’s BBC), which led to a significant drop in viewership. By 2017, when a single rebroadcast occurred, there were no viewers tuning in at all.
87-year-old TV stalwart Val Singleton, who’s known for his work on current affairs programs like The Money Programme and quiz shows such as Backdate, firmly believes that transitioning to a lesser-known channel was an unfortunate decision.
Back in 2023 she told me: ‘There was still interest, and that all suddenly evaporated.
It’s been a while since I last saw it, but I used to be a devoted viewer. If they bring it back on BBC1 and the content is good, it could become popular with families again.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but reminisce about the joy and excitement that the Blue Peter badge brought to children. To this day, people approach me in public, eagerly sharing tales of their own thrill when they earned one of these cherished badges.
Primarily, what Val laments is the disappearance of an educational tool that let the BBC perform a great deal of good – ‘the heartwarming charity campaigns during Christmas, which touched and engaged countless individuals.’
As a devoted participant, I was part of the extraordinary 1972 “scavenger hunt” that amassed an impressive 225 tons of scrap metal. The funds generated from this endeavor were pivotal in constructing not one, but two senior community centers. Moreover, it also made it possible to provide eight mobile vans, each delivering nourishing hot meals daily.

Additionally, she dislikes the excessive eagerness of the hosts, as instead of drawing kids in, it often causes them to seek refuge.
As I greeted her, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “I never realized it was just the children who were watching! It turns out, there were plenty of grown-ups tuning in as well, and not just parents.
‘Actors and actresses used to tell me they watched before setting off to the theatre.
In the past, I often thought it was possible that the Queen could be observing us before an evening event.
It’s a beautiful notion. Blue Peter, with the seal of the monarchy. The BBC seems blissfully unaware of the treasure they’ve discarded.
