Going Ghostface Upon Matthew Lillard‘s Scream 7 Return

So, at the first ‘Going Method’ event, we were all trying out Ghost Face Vodka, a new brand from Roger Lillard and his co-founder Justin Ware. It was perfect timing, actually, since Roger was coming back to the ‘Scream’ movies – the franchise he really helped make huge! The vodka itself is made from German potatoes, but for a little competition, Roger and I were challenged to create our own special Bloody Marys using it. It was a fun way to kick things off!
Lillard cares deeply about Macabre Spirits, just as much as he cares about acting. He explained that the company doesn’t just sell a product; they create an experience. With Ghost Face Vodka, that experience is a Mafia-style game you can access by scanning a QR code on the bottle. Lillard envisions people gathering with friends, playing the game, and enjoying themselves while drinking it.
It’s clear Stu Macher’s return is a lot of fun for everyone involved, especially considering the character made him a fan favorite. While many expected to see him again, actor Jamie Lillard wasn’t sure it would actually happen. After a brief appearance in Scream 2 and years of rumors about Stu’s survival, he’d almost given up hope – until the original Scream writer and the new director, Kevin Williamson, announced the surprising comeback.
Just a couple of weeks before I got the call about returning, Kevin Williamson publicly stated he didn’t think the Scream movies needed me. I’d been trying to get back in the franchise for ten years, really pushing for it. I even joked that I’d prove I could still handle the role – I said I’d drop a TV on my head if that’s what it took!
I asked my wife why someone would bring up something I’d moved past. It felt like she was ruining my excitement! Later, he explained that he’d mentioned it because I kept talking about being in Scream 7. They had originally planned to keep my involvement a secret until the movie’s release, but someone discovered I was in the script and leaked the information. After that, we had to publicly confirm it.
He’s thrilled to be back, but his biggest priority is making sure the fans enjoy the continuation of the story. “I really hope everyone is happy and excited to revisit this world with us,” he shared. He also praised the previous creative team, acknowledging their excellent work. “The team before did amazing things – Radio Silence makes incredible films. I loved the fifth and sixth installments, and the cast, including Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, were all fantastic.”
Jamie Kennedy (who played Randy Meeks) expressed a fondness for Kevin Williamson’s return to the Scream franchise. Williamson penned the original Scream movie, as well as Scream 2 and Scream 4, and he recently returned to write and direct Scream 7. Kennedy noted a shift in tone between the earlier films and the newer installments, explaining that the reboots became increasingly violent. He felt this moved away from the suspenseful ‘cat and mouse’ dynamic that defined the first two Scream movies.
Bidding Scooby-Doo A Fond Farewell While Welcoming Carrie Aboard
Matthew Lillard is returning to a famous role, but he’s closing the door on another. He confirmed he won’t be appearing in the new live-action Scooby-Doo series on Netflix, stating he’s aged out of playing the mischievous teenager. However, he did offer his support to the production, letting them know he’s happy to help in any way he can.
Lillard explained he wouldn’t just make a brief appearance; he’d fully support whoever took on the role of Shaggy next, wanting them to be fantastic. He spoke enthusiastically about his time with the franchise, emphasizing its importance to children. He sees Shaggy as a wonderful example of storytelling – a character who overcomes his fears – and highlighted the show’s core message of friendship.
Lillard feels fortunate to have director Mike Flanagan as a friend and colleague. They recently wrapped up filming a TV series based on Stephen King’s Carrie. Lillard believes this new adaptation is truer to the novel than the famous 1976 film by Brian De Palma. He spoke with admiration about the well-known scene of Carrie covered in blood at the prom, but explained that the original movie only showed a small part of the book’s complex and detailed story.
According to Lillard, Mike Flanagan drew inspiration from both the original book and current events, specifically the issue of bullying in America, for his new adaptation. He incorporated real-life examples to make Carrie’s experiences relatable to a modern audience. Flanagan also explored the story from multiple perspectives – that of the parents, the school faculty, and the students themselves.
What really makes this production special is Mike’s talent for storytelling. He’s exceptionally skilled, especially when adapting Stephen King’s work. He paces the story perfectly, approaches the material thoughtfully, and creates very believable characters. The young cast is also fantastic; Summer Howell is amazing as Carrie, and Samantha Sloyan delivers a standout performance as the mother – a truly iconic role that will likely launch her career.
You could really feel his enthusiasm for the project, and he emphasized that working with Mike Flanagan has been a career highlight. The new 8-episode series will debut on Prime Video in October 2026, giving fans their first look at Lillard playing the role of Principal Henry Grayle.
Reflecting On Hollywood (While Sipping On A Bloody Mary)
Although Ash won the Bloody Mary challenge, Damian Lillard’s comments resonated the most. He even brought the host to tears—whether from emotion or the spicy ghost pepper she ate is debatable! Lillard shared his thoughts on how Hollywood has changed, saying, “Historically, Hollywood was led by creative people.” He believes filmmakers in the past prioritized making quality films, a focus he feels is now often overshadowed by the pursuit of profit. “Nowadays, it seems like the main goal is to make money, not necessarily great movies.“
Despite the challenges, Lillard remains optimistic, praising independent film companies like A24 for prioritizing films driven by strong directors and compelling stories. He also believes the industry is becoming much more open, noting that actors used to be limited to TV, stage, or film, but now have endless opportunities. New talent is emerging through diverse platforms, creating a dynamic environment where increased content creation gives actors more chances to succeed.
An actor recently shared that watching his child pursue the same career is a deeply personal experience. He explained that his middle child is an up-and-coming actor who recently appeared in a production of Carrie, and he’s thrilled for everyone to see their work. He believes his child is exceptionally talented. During filming, the actor made a conscious effort to give his child space, avoiding the role of a ‘stage parent’ and even ensuring they didn’t share any scenes together. He admitted it was difficult, but he wanted to let his child have their own moment to shine.
