As a movie buff, I really love when stories come full circle, and it sounds like Jessica Ritter feels the same way. She told me she was initially bummed about not being involved in something she enjoyed, but it taught her to trust how things unfold. And look at her now! She shared that she’s landed an amazing role on Dexter: Resurrection all these years later, which is just fantastic!
Ritter recently finished playing Mia, a sommelier who also happens to be a serial killer, in Original Sin, which brings Michael C. Hall back together with his famous serial killer role. The opportunity arose naturally because of her working relationship with showrunner Scott Reynolds, who she previously collaborated with on Jessica Jones. “Scott Reynolds… we were texting about restaurants in Pasadena, and I asked him what he was working on. He told me about ‘Original Sin,’ and I asked if there were any roles for me, since it was filming near my home,” Ritter explained.
It’s a remarkable story how one actress went from a small guest appearance in the first season to a leading part in a later series connected to the original show. Although there wasn’t a place for Ritter in Original Sin, Reynolds had a different, and ultimately better, plan. He told her they were nearly finished with filming. For Ritter, staying patient and continuing to work hard eventually brought her back to the Dexter world at just the right moment-with a significant role that made the twenty-year wait worthwhile.
Ritter shared that Reynolds inquired, “Would you be interested in appearing on Dexter: Resurrection?… Ritter, I specifically created this character with you in mind – it’s a fantastic opportunity.” Ritter explained, “I read the script, and my immediate reaction was, ‘Oh, my God, this is so good… it just continued to improve with each scene.”
