In the spirit of staying true to Baron Zemo’s comic book origins, it seems logical for the Thunderbolts to assemble following the events of “Captain America: Civil War” and the introduction of the Sokovia Accords. The Sokovia Accords are essentially about control, more specifically, the supervision of individuals with superpowers by global governments. Therefore, this MCU Phase 3 team of Thunderbolts would have been highly adaptable under the Sokovia Accords, as most of its members were already imprisoned.
Previously, it was assumed that the Thunderbolts team, given their appearance in the trailers seemed to operate without government supervision, would face consequences due to Valentina Allegra De Fontaine’s manipulation. However, the composition of the Thunderbolts in MCU Phase 3 is more likely to follow rules, either as a means to atone for their past transgressions or to gain independence. This potential storyline within MCU Phase 3 would have been particularly intriguing, especially since it could feature well-known antagonists from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why Marvel’s Thunderbolts* Movie Would’ve Made Sense In Phase 3
It Would Have Given Marvel A Chance To Bring Some Fan-Favorite Villains Back To The Big Screen
A less villainous yet more intriguing team, such as one featuring Abomination and Vulture, might have been a more enticing proposition for casual film viewers during the MCU Phase 3. The Avengers movies are typically grand spectacles due to the diverse nature of their main team. In comparison, a team consisting of two assassins with similar backstories and three super soldiers may not be as engaging.
A Thunderbolts movie based on the MCU’s Phase 3 wouldn’t merely have been another opportunity for Marvel to create a team-up film during its peak period, but it would have offered Marvel a chance to revitalize some of their iconic villains. Now, it seems that the time has passed for these characters to make a comeback. Although Yelena Belova and Red Guardian have gained unexpected popularity among fans, the reappearance of Taskmaster in Thunderbolts* doesn’t elicit the same excitement as the return of Justin Hammer would.
