Yoshitaka Mine, the financial strategist for the Tojo Clan, was a key figure in the events of Yakuza 3. Unlike most yakuza who had always lived outside the law, Mine came from a successful business background. He became involved with the yakuza because he was disappointed with a society that only valued him for his wealth. However, even within the Tojo Clan, he found that people were only interested in what he could offer financially, not who he was as a person.

Although Yakuza 3 wasn’t the most well-known game in the series, the character Mine was a fan favorite villain. He stood out because of his cold, business-like personality, which was very different from the villain in Yakuza 2. Sega recognized his popularity and even changed his original ending in Yakuza Kiwami 3 so he could return in future games.

Despite losing to Kiryu repeatedly, his determination is surprisingly likable. He keeps fighting through every encounter, and by the end, he gains respect for Kiryu, even though they remain opponents.

Kosei Shishido Became A Yakuza For The Freedom It Offered

Though often overlooked, The Man Who Erased His Name features a compelling story and memorable villains, showcasing the strength of the Yakuza series. Kosei Shishido, a leader of the Watase Family, is a particularly notable antagonist. Like Ryuji, Kosei primarily relies on brute strength, but he doesn’t share the same sense of honor.

Although Shishido isn’t as honorable as some, he’s dedicated to preserving the yakuza’s strength in Like A Dragon Gaiden. His time as a coliseum fighter makes him one of the few who can truly challenge Kiryu. While Shishido does survive the game, his situation with the Daidoji family might actually be more unfortunate, as he’s once again being manipulated and used by others.

Tsuneo Iwami Is Easily One Of The Most Hated Villains Ever

Iwami from Yakuza 6 is a villain that players particularly love to hate. The Yakuza series is known for creating villains with understandable reasons for their actions, but Iwami stands out because his goals and the way he goes about achieving them are completely without merit or respect.

Unlike most Yakuza villains who rise from poverty and turn to crime out of necessity, Iwami was born into a life of wealth and became the head of a major company. Despite his success, he orchestrated a large-scale plot to gain control of the Yomei Alliance. He wasn’t simply cunning; he was willing to betray anyone, even those who trusted him. Throughout the Kiryu saga, Iwami stands out as perhaps the only villain motivated purely by a desire to cause someone’s death.

Keiji Shibusawa Helped Build Up Kiryu’s Name In The Underworld

One of the things that makes Yakuza 0 so good is its memorable cast of villains. Keiji Shibusawa is a standout – he doesn’t immediately seem like the main threat, while Kuze is constantly pursuing Kiryu. However, it’s Shibusawa who’s actually pulling the strings behind the scenes and orchestrating everything.

Honestly, this guy really showed me just how cold some yakuza bosses can be. He was completely self-serving throughout the whole game – he didn’t care about anyone and would break any yakuza rule if it meant getting more power. Ultimately, he went after Kiryu directly, and his defeat was a huge part of what allowed Kiryu to become the Dragon of Dojima. It was a really impactful moment!

Masataka Ebina Despised The Yakuza World

Following the success of its predecessor, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth faced high expectations. Thankfully, compelling antagonists like Masataka Ebina helped deliver. Though first presented as an ally to former yakuza members after the dissolution of the families, Ebina quickly revealed his true, more sinister nature.

Ebina’s life was marked by hardship due to his family’s ties to the yakuza, fueling a deep hatred for the organization. This led him to devise an elaborate scheme for revenge: exiling former yakuza members to Nele Island, where they would be forced to handle dangerous nuclear waste for the rest of their lives with no hope of escape. The plan was so intricate and fitting for a game about the downfall of the yakuza, it felt like something straight out of a Yakuza title.

Homare Nishitani III Used His Power To Take Advantage Of Others

Homare Nishitani III feels like a villain Sega could have created instead of Majima. Similar to Majima, he’s completely unhinged, but where Majima has hidden depths, Nishitani is purely a monster. He simply wants to use his position as a yakuza to indulge in violence and pleasure.

Nishitani is a truly awful character – even the game’s other villain, Kosei, can’t stand him. He operates a decadent ship called The Castle, where he hosts everything from deadly fights to the enslavement of people who fall into debt. It’s a shame he’s only featured in a side story, because more players deserved to experience how vile he is in a main game.

Akira Nishikiyama Wanted The Respect His Oath Brother Already Had

From the very beginning, Kiryu’s close friend Nishikiyama showed how damaging the Yakuza lifestyle could be. He became a villain because of a tragic situation – his efforts to help someone he cared about ended up hurting everyone involved. Kiryu lost twenty years of his life, and Nishikiyama was forced onto a difficult and ruthless path as he struggled to stay relevant within the Yakuza world.

Nishiki’s role as a seemingly heroic figure in Yakuza 0 actually makes his story even sadder, because players see that he was once a good person at heart. Sadly, his deep-seated insecurities took over, leading to a devastating downfall that left him unrecognizable to even Kiryu. Years after the game’s release, Nishiki remains one of the most memorable villains in gaming.

Ryo Aoki Aimed To Erase His Own Past

Following the shift to turn-based combat and a new hero, Ryo Aoki faced high expectations as the first villain in the revamped Yakuza series. He delivered brilliantly, helping to make Yakuza: Like A Dragon stand out with a villain who was both complex and instantly unlikeable. Aoki cleverly exploited societal prejudices against marginalized groups to build his power, adding a disturbing layer to his character.

Ryo, the son of a mafia boss, completely reinvented himself, distancing himself from his shameful family history to become a powerful politician. He ruthlessly eliminated anyone who opposed him, all driven by a desire to cleanse Japan of its corruption and moral ambiguity. He was a truly awful person, though the final moments he shared with Ichiban left some players wondering if he was capable of change.
